It was derby day for the Hornets Reserves who took on bitter rivals GDL Reserves in Division 5. Looking for revenge for the reverse fixture and the cup exit, Hornets were unable to better a team they desperately want to beat.

The defeat is the first since Hangover back in January and only the second in nine games, the last being the GDL Cup game. Sadly, with results elsewhere in the league going against them, Hornets drop to sixth in the table and the points gap is starting to look worrying.

However, with four games left and all of them against sides above them in the table, it provides the Reserves with a chance to claw back some points they lost earlier in the season.

The disappointing season continued for Hornets FC this week as they stumbled to a 5-3 defeat away to St. Georges.

In their second meeting in three weeks, the Hornets Reserves hosted Worcester Rileys and despite a gritty match which saw both teams reduced to ten men, Hornets were able to walk away with their heads held high after a 4-1 win.

Nick Banks put three of the Reserves goals into the onion bag to take his season tally to nine, but not to be out-done, Danny B netted a brace in the first team game, bringing his total to nine. The race for the golden boot is hotting up!

The Reserves win leaves them sixth in the table but only one point off the league leaders The Bell. The top five however have several games in hand over the Hornets but both The Bell and Worcester City Wanderers both have crucial games with the Yellow and Black to come. The final games will be very important for the Reserves.

The first team are currently ninth in Division 2 but only four points off fourth place. With a pull up of socks there is no reason they can’t still finish in the upper half of the table. Both teams will be looking to finish this season strongly.

This time, it was Hornets who would show why they deserved to win, holding out for a 3-2 victory.

However, down at Perdiswell the pitches were hard but nothing that a little running on wouldn’t thaw out and certainly no harder than when playing on them in September.

So the Reserves were up against old rivals Hangover, who in three of the last four matches with the Reserves have put four goals into the net. Unfortunately for the Reserves, this would be the fourth time Hangover would net four, and they also took all three points.

Both clubs will be hoping for better weather and better results next weekend when both teams will be at home, the firsts against Perrywood Reserves and the Reserves against FC Five Fathers.

Hornets 2011 Player of the Year, Dan Hollings, has hung up his gloves for Hornets FC after 36 appearances for the club. In those games he kept four clean sheets, the best ratio for a goalkeeper at the club and he took home the golden boot from the Hornets foray into Futsal.

On Monday, January 9th, Hollings via Facebook wrote:

Hi Fellas, Sadly boys I won’t be playing for Hornets any more this season. I’ve been asked to play for Bromyard and cannot turn down the opportunity. I hope we can all keep in touch and I wish the first and reserve teams all the best for the rest of the season. It has been a really tough decision and would like to thank Richie and all the manager and players for all their support it has been massibley appreciated. Thanks lads.

Dan has revived his career at Bromyard Town and in his first game after leaving Hornets, he was voted the games “star man”.

Hollings kept Bromyard in the game, making fine saves from Marvin Nisbett and Pete Wood in a second period in which the hosts were pinned back for long spells.

The trio of goals means Danny B is now joint top goal scorer with Andy Woodward, both on 7 goals for the season.

With the first team granted another week off, the Reserves were visitors to West Malvern TC FC at Diglis, the ground where their last game was frozen out.

The result means the Reserves haven’t lost in four games and will give them the belief that they can continue to get results in this league.

OK, so it wasn’t quite as dramatic as the header image suggests but due to a strong overnight frost both the HFC and the Reserve matches for Sunday December 18th were called off.

The Reserves were due to face first team shirt sponsors Rileys at Diglis but not only was the ground too hard but the pitch contained a huge frozen puddle and the goal-mouths were like frozen ponds.

The Hornets did see some football take place over the weekend when the Futsal team finished their season against Randoms. After an initial clerical error that saw the Hornets end up an hour early for their fixture (despite emails proving otherwise), the cold took its toll on the players and they suffered a disappointing 7-3 defeat.
